This was an absolutely delightful trip, totally effortless, everything is taken care of. We flew from the US to Belize City and within an hour were placed on the next flight to Ambergris where you are met with a transfer to your hotel. We stayed at Mata Rocks which included an ocean view balcony room and the view is priceless. Because the ocean is so shallow here the colors are gorgeous. The hotel staff seems to work around the clock, there is a small pool right in front and a pier where you can be picked up for every excursion or water activity you desire.
We're snorkeling enthusiasts and arranged for trips out to the reef every day except the last (to allow swimwear to dry out). Our last day we arranged a trip to Tikal in Guatemala through the hotel to see the Mayan ruins there. It's an easy seaside walk into town- which we enjoyed every day, or you can just relax at this quiet resort to your hearts content. We had read reviews on the property before going and can say with confidence that the place is in excellent condtion. All of Ambergris seems to get the sea grass that washes up but they diligently haul it away twice daily. We passed a lot of other properties, some less convenient and some certainly in mosquito areas which Mata Rocks was not. I would definitely stay there again.
It's easy to take a water taxi over to Belize for a few hours ($20/pp ec way-about an hour), which we did. We thought it would be nicer to visit on a day when the cruise ships were not it- the opposite is true as almost everything was closed. Go on a day when the ships are in port, the cruise passengers have to tender a Long Way but the cheerful chaos would be fun and all the shops would be open. Your water taxi drops you right in the heart of everything. Hope you have a great time, we loved it, the variety of fish and the closeness of the reef (only 10 min. by boat from our hotel location) made this a perfect trip. The water temp is perfect, calm and very, very clear- best kept snorkeling secret in the Caribbean. We went with Sea-rious and booked right from them in town ($35/pp included your pickup at your own dock), the water taxi also goes to nearby Caulker Caye which I wish we'd had time to do- the 7 days went way too fast. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
